Session Dates: November 12, 19, 26 and December 3, 10, 17
4:00pm-5:30pm, Pacific
On Zoom

A 6 week offering led by Leonie Smith for Black, Indigenous, People of Colour who are looking for a learning and exploring environment that is liberation focused and built around their needs.

If you are curious about NVC, interested in how to explore ways of being that celebrate all that you are in the face of systems that do not see you, please join!

Nonviolent Communication is a way of thinking, speaking and living. It is a powerful set of tools to increase our compassion, understanding, and authenticity to get everyone’s needs met. For many BIPOC folks, we live, work and play in environments where our needs are not considered. This course is where we will explore how to make room for our needs in support of collective liberation and genuine self-expression.

How do we make sense of this from an anti-racist, anti-oppression (ARAO) point of view, when some people do not understand institutional power and power dynamics? And how can NVC practices address the needs of people of colour?

  • Different types of observations, including systematic observations that help to anchor compassionate inquiry

  • How emotions help us to get clear on what is important to us and build strategies for growth

  • How requests can be a path to partnership, helping when being with others, including when working across differences

Sessions 4-6: We learn practical skills that we can use in situations such as:

  • Responding effectively to acts of racism in a way that reduces harm to us as BIPOC

  • Advocating for what we want in ways that are more likely to make a difference

  • Transforming the self-critical voice and undoing colonised thinking

  • Holding ourselves and others without judgement through focusing on the values underneath them

  • Preparing for and navigating difficult conversations

  • NEW! We will also explore systemic constellations as a source of learning and growth
